December 13, 2007—National Podcasting System founder and CEO, Brian McMahon was elected this month to a post in the Association for Downloadable Media. McMahon will head the Advertising Standards committee as its inaugural chair.
"I'm pleased and honored to have been selected to chair this committee which will play a crucial role not just in the association but in the way media is measured in terms of advertising and marketing in the world of Web 2.0 and the future of media," said McMahon.
The Association for Downloadable Media, ADM, held the member-wide election after operating under the auspice of a steering committee.
The ADM is an industry association focused on providing advertising and audience measurement standards for episodic and downloadable media. The association was formed in 2007 to provide leadership in and organization of advertising and audience measurement standards, research, education and advocacy to all those involved in downloadable media (such as podcast/ATOM/RSS media enclosures) across the Internet, mobile devices, handsets, set-top boxes, P2P and other emerging platforms.
The Advertising Standards committee will analyze and create standardized measurements upon which effectiveness, reach, and costs can be derived. The standards will be critical to advertisers and others to compare performance within the new media and against traditional media such as television, radio and print.
"While everyone knows that Web-based media is highly effective, there has been little effort in quantifying its effectiveness as is the case of the old media. Thusly, advertisers have been stifled or put-off by the lack of measurements. No doubt, advertisers have balked at placing ads in media where standards are lacking. I have little doubt that our committee and ADM will go a long way in showing that the new media is the new direction for advertisers and we'll have the numbers and standards to prove it," said McMahon.
Brian McMahon held a number of advertising positions for 25 years including Creative Director for Ogilvy and Mather. He founded National Podcasting System in 2006 after seeing that advertising and marketing on traditional media was failing and that the new media, especially podcasting, is the direction companies should be taking to get their word out.
